AAHGS-DC - James Dent Walker Chapter

The African American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), was founded in 1977 in Washington, DC by a small group of historians and genealogists, who felt a need to share resources and methodology for pursuing historical and genealogical research. For more than 45 years, AAHGS members have worked together to trace the historical ties that bind us one to another, mold the present, and shape the future.

AAHGS is a non-profit membership organization committed to the history, genealogy, and culture of African-Ancestored populations in the national and international community.  AAHGS operates as a national organization with local affiliate chapters.

The James Dent Walker Chapter, Washington, DC (AAHGS-DC) stresses the importance of history and genealogy by encouraging active participation in recording research and documenting personal family histories.

We strive to make outstanding contributions to the preservation of African American history and genealogy by promoting scholarly research, providing resources for historical and genealogical studies, creating a network of persons with similar interests, and assisting members in documenting their histories.
