On Friday, September 13, 2024, I was invited by the Descendants of Enslaved Communities at the University of Virginia to be a panelist for their Inaugural Descendant’s Movement Symposium.
Another breakout session, “Cemeteries and Burial Preservation”, coincided with my panel “Healing Spaces: Promoting Mental Health and Wellness in Descendant Communities." Members of the Daughters of Zion Cemetery in Charlottesville, VA created excitement during that panel talking about the audio tour app they’ve created. Visitors use GPS to take a audio guided walking tour of the cemetery. When possible, direct descendants are narrating the audio segment about their ancestors.
During the symposium closing, members invited all of us over to the Daughters of Zion Cemetery to experience the audio tour. On a day full of amazing people sharing incredible information, this impromptu trip was a wonderful bonus to a truly marvelous symposium.
Enjoy a few pictures I took, and a snippet of the tour stop for Burkley Bullock b. 1830.
